SPONSORED: Very few topics spark more vigorous online debate than the question of how to detox THC. Everyone seemingly has their own method, or is pumping their own “magic” product. Most of us don’t want to detox THC, but there are several situations in which we have to. We want to take this opportunity to debunk several of the internet’s myths, set some records straight, and recommend a better option. Unfortunately, most of the information I read regarding this topic is factually inaccurate, and also not written by people with any medical nor scientific background.

To begin to assess your personal situation the first thing you need to know is the collection method of the test you will take. The most common collection method being urine, which accounts for over 80% of all drug tests done in the USA. Other bodily fluid tests have similar cutoff windows including blood and saliva. Urine tests at times can be at times quite cumbersome depending on your baseline attributes.

Once you know what kind of test you will be taking, you need to know how much time you have to work with. Both until the real test and also to estimate how long it would be in your system naturally.

Green Gone’s Assessment Uses 6 Criteria

Age

Younger people naturally have a faster metabolism.

Gender

Males typically have a faster metabolism.

Weight

Anyone north of 200 pounds can expect significantly longer periods of abstinence required.

Usage

With daily continued usage, it will take longer for THC to get out of your system.

Edibles or Oils

Users that use concentrates nearly always take longer as the THC content is far higher, leading to larger volumes of metabolites.

Amount of Time Abstinent

Depending on how much time you already have abstinent you could already be well on your way naturally.

So, for instance, a 300 pound daily 1/8th ounce smoker that has a test in 2 days can’t realistically even detox. It’s simply not enough time to accomplish anything given this person baseline would most likely take well over a month or even way longer. Conversely, if you haven’t smoked cannabis in weeks and you take a hit or 2 at a party, you most likely don’t need a month abstinent. This is to give you a rough estimate.

The best way to know you are clean before you go in for a test is to double check yourself with test strips first. There is tons of misinformation on the internet about this process; so we are here to help

The Real Facts

Assuming your urine passes the quantitative numbers to back it up (Scr and specific gravity), and qualitatively passes inspection (color, temperature, foam, sometimes even smell) it then goes to the actual drug test dipstick. ALL test facilities do validity testing on urine samples.

Next, after having confirmed that this is real urine from a real person they often do what is known as a 5-panel dipstick. Focusing on the THC aspect of dipstick, the referenced cutoff for THC is 50ng/ml. The dipstick itself is an immunoassay transfected on a piece of litmus paper so that if molecules of the right molecular weight and shape of THC-COOH bind in high enough concentrations the test tracer will go blank, indicating a failure. Which leads me to warn you about one of the first ways you can accidentally fail.

Buying foreign test strips, or ones from a dollar store. Several of these strips are either not inspected, or quote the wrong concentrations. You may pass these strips and think you are all set, then find out that the reference range is 100ng/ml, causing you to go in and fail your drug test, assuming the batch of foreign dollar store strips worked at all.

There are two things here to summarize: 1. Make sure your strips are made in the USA (so they are inspected under jurisdiction by the FDA) 2. Make sure the range quoted on the strip is 50ng/ml. Try lab-caliber test strips that meet both criteria.

Bad Methods

Fake Urine or Substituted Urine

These tend to get caught fairly quickly at labs most of the time. Many states consider this a crime, as it is a form of fraud.

Additives

Tampering with the sample will usually get caught and results in automatic failure. Can also be considered a crime.

Creatinine

Over dilution of your urine while simultaneously taking huge doses or oral creatinine is a great way to cause irreversible damage to your kidneys and still fail. This causes a discrepancy between the level of dilution and the huge levels of creatinine in the sample.

Diluted Bleach

This theory makes sense that by making your urine hyper alkaline. This way you can dissolve a ton of acidic metabolites of THC to eliminate them faster. The obvious downside is you just bleached your kidney and surely killed many of those renal cells. Please don’t do this. It’s really not worth it.

Niacin or Heavy dilution

Niacin and heavy dilution doesn’t actually detox you. Different B vitamins like this can add color to the urine sample, but they are going to run quantitative tests anyway, so that is limited value.

Our Method

greengoneWe at Green Gone began our investigation in March 2015 on how to crack the code of a perfect detox. Being a pharmacist myself too, I jumped on the internet to see what was out there already. Suffice to say I was far less than impressed. We assembled the whole team of pharmacists and went to the drawing board for 2 years. We wanted to ask the hard questions; but how would you actually go about this scientifically? With our team full of intimate knowledge of THC kinetics we came up with a solution, after much trial and error.

The 5 Ingredient Blend

St. John Wort

St. John Wort is a natural plant proven to be a potent liver enzyme inducer. THC is heavily metabolized by the liver through enzymes, which are separated into CYP families based on their cytochrome spectrum of activity. St John Wort has been show in studies to more than double the activity of these enzymes, specifically 2C9 and 3A4, needed to break down THC.

Sodium Bicarb

This helps to increase the pH of urine so the acidic metabolites can dissolve into urine better.

White Willow 15% Extract

Using molecular docking software, we were able to make a 3-dimensional model of both THC and the albumin binding sites in the blood. THC is usually 95-99% protein bound to albumin. The protein-bound THC cannot be metabolized or urinated out. The derivatives of white willow powder bind to many of the same sites as THC and boot THC so it can be metabolized and urinated out more effectively.

Horsetail Extract

Horsetail extract is a mild, all-natural diuretic. Not only are you making more volume of urine, but, more importantly, the urine you are making is rich in metabolites to get THC out of your system entirely.

Psyllium Husk

THC is also excreted through the bowels. The idea here is to add a source of fiber to bind THC in the gut and eliminate with the feces.
