Growing Marijuana: Top 5 High-Yield Strains

There’s one question that both novice and experienced gardeners ask when growing marijuana: how can I get the highest yield? Proper growing techniques go a long way in encouraging cannabis plants to produce more and bigger buds, but certain cannabis strains have a genetic predisposition to growing bigger, more resin-saturated flowers. It all starts with the plant’s phenotype: is it an indica or sativa?

The indica phenotype, with its short bushy plants, is notorious for producing high yields at quick flowering times. It’s important to note that the phenotype of a plant just describes what it looks like, so while a strain may have sativa genetics, it can still bear the physical characteristics (and massive yield) of an indica. Here are five of the top-yielding indica phenotype strains!

Super Skunk

This strain is a perennial classic, and for good reason. The plant is medium sized, averaging a height of about 40-50 inches and yields of up to 700 grams per square meter (28 grams in an ounce). It prefers a sunny climate, but can still be easily grown indoors. This is a good strain for those new to growing marijuana, thanks to its hardiness and average size. Smoking Super Skunk usually results in a clear-headed buzz that sometimes evolves into an intense couch-lock.

Northern Lights

Another heavy-hitting indica, Northern Lights shares Super Skunk’s average size of 40-50 inches, as well as the preference for a warm sunny climate. Its yield is quite a bit lower at up to 450 grams per square meter, but the buds are dense and packed with a staggering amount of THC. Northern Lights has a sweet and spicy flavor, and creates a relaxing euphoria that’ll make you want to curl up and get comfortable.

White Rhino

This strain is a hybrid that leans heavily toward indica in its genotype as well as its phenotype. With huge colas encrusted in a thick coating of frosty white trichomes, there’s not much to dislike about this strain. It’s also incredibly adaptive, responding well to nearly any growing environment.

If grown outdoors, they can reach six feet tall! But they also respond well to a multitude of pruning and shaping techniques. Add that to its massive yield of 500-750 grams per square meter, and you have a winner on your hands.

Strawberry Kush

Strawberry Kush is a gorgeous strain favored by indoor growers, due to its short stature. You can expect one of these plants to reach about 40 inches maximum, but to produce nice large buds that are dense with resin. It’s very easy to grow in any temperate climate, and its flowering time is less than three months! Its yield is up to 450 grams per square meter.

For its height, it’s a real heavy hitter! This strain is generally a recreational one due to its lack of significant CBD levels. It has a sweet, slightly woody and spicy smell, and leads to a cerebrally focused high.

Cheese Quake

This strain grows real big, real fast. Unchecked, they can reach six feet in height; but they usually don’t because they’re weighed down with fantastically large and dense buds.

This strain’s yield tops out at about 500 grams per square meter, producing up to 18 ounces of light green flower per plant.

Cheese Quake has a slightly sour aroma punctuated by just a hint of grape. You can expect a mental buzz as the high is winding up, and it’s accompanied by a deep body relaxation.

If you want to start off growing marijuana for maximum yield, go with one of these indica phenotype strains.
