It’s no surprise that when people think of cannabis they immediately think of the west coast. California has been the face of cannabis since the beginning, and they’ve been dominating hte marijuana economy. Some of the most popular strains of cannabis come from Cali, and their local community has been the strongest advocates of medical marijuana. Humboldt County is home to some of the most renowned cultivators in the world. For now, the west coast is the undisputed home of cannabis. However, with the rising growth of support for the legalization of cannabis, the east coast is slowly working their way in. With over 5 different east coast states taking a stance on legal cannabis, it is safe to say their cannabis industry is getting ready to boom!

In the early 1990s, ethnobotanist Terence McKenna released his 'Stoned Ape Hypothesis', also known as the 'Stoned Ape Theory,' in the book Food of the Gods. At the time, such a profound and likely unprovable hypothesis had been seen by the broad scientific community as the ramblings and poetic conjecture of a psychedelic fanatic. This is not to say, however, that the book and the “stoned ape theory” failed to make their way into pockets of human society, or that McKenna's findings were entirely shrugged off. As we will see, they were anything but.

Much like Colorado and Washington, the introduction of a legal marijuana market in Oregon has been generating millions in tax revenues and created thousands of jobs. Though revenues from marijuana sales continue to grow, one thing has not: the price. In fact, in places where you can buy weed legally, prices seem to have gone down, sometimes significantly. Those of us buying an ounce of weed in Portland have seen this price trend in action. And while marijuana can be bought in various shapes, forms, and quantities, an ounce (28 grams) is the maximum amount of flower recreational consumers can purchase or possess in Oregon.

Only in America could a tale like that of the so-called "Kid Cannabis," actually happen. Nate Norman, a.k.a. "Kid Cannabis," was a shy, withdrawn, oafish, portly high school dropout who stumbled into building a drug empire based in a small Idaho town in the early 2000s.

Last year, the legal marijuana market was worth an estimated $7.2 billion, and it's projected to grow 17 percent annually, according to an analysis by New Frontier Data. Medical marijuana sales alone are expected to grow from $4.7 billion to $13.3 billion from 2016-2020. To say that the marijuana industry will slow down when heading into 2018 is far-fetched, especially because that's when California and Canada's recreational marijuana programs will go into effect. Fortunately, the marijuana industry has created and continues to create a surplus of employment opportunities, which have significantly boosted the U.S. economy. Read on to find out what the marijuana industry may look like in 2018 and onwards.

From a marketing standpoint, cannabis is pretty foolproof. As long as you offer your marijuana at the right price point, “if you grow it, they will come!”However, if you're a producer looking to differentiate your cannabis product from the rest, packaging becomes a huge deal, especially in states where your customers can't even smell the product. How will increasingly strict packaging laws affect how consumers are choosing and buying marijuana?

In 2012, Washington became one of two states to recreationally legalize marijuana alongside Colorado. As a result of this decision, adults aged 21 and above can now legally possess, purchase, and grow their own cannabis, which started a trend on the West Coast. In terms of population, Seattle is Washington's largest municipality with a little over 608,000 people, and this city takes the title as the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region. Aside from Seattle being one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., many of their residents are marijuana users, which has generated millions of dollars in marijuana tax revenues. How much can you expect to spend on weed in Seattle, and where’s the best place to start shopping? Read on to find out!
