When smoking marijuana, it’s easy to not only momentarily forget about the outside world, but to also forget about the people that you’ll see once your toke session ends. Sometimes, when smoking marijuana, our thoughts lead us to faraway places, and once we realize what time it is and where we need to be, rushing occurs. However, if you take necessary precautions before toking and put a plan into place, you won’t have to worry about smelling like marijuana afterwards. Read on to find out the best ways to not smell after smoking marijuana before going out in public.

Things to Know Before Smoking Marijuana

Before lighting up, it’s useful to be aware of a few aspects that may help you down the road. For example, there are different body parts and areas that smell the most after smoking marijuana. This includes your hair, body, breath, hands, and clothing. Fortunately, there are several precautions you can take to help reduce the smell of marijuana after your next toke session.

Breath Mints, Washing Hands, & Tying Hair Back

After toking, our hands, breath, and hair tend to smell like marijuana the most. Therefore, consider keeping some mints, gum, and/or travel mouthwash with you to use afterwards. Also, if you have long hair, consider pulling it back into a bun or ponytail because long hair often traps smells, especially marijuana. Lastly, if possible, wash your hands after smoking marijuana to eliminate the smell. However, if this isn’t an option, keep some lotion and/or hand sanitizer with you as an alternative.

Importance of Ventilation & Proper Air Flow

The location you choose to smoke marijuana is important because if you’re indoors, proper air flow and ventilation is greatly needed to prevent smelling like marijuana. It’s best to ventilate whenever possible and avoid hotboxing. The best option for smoking marijuana and not smelling like it is to smoke outdoors. When doing this, try to not stand in the direction where the marijuana smoke is blowing, because then you’re just asking to smell like potent bud.

Additionally, when smoking marijuana outdoors, it’s helpful to tilt your head up in the air and blow the smoke into the open air away from you. However, if you choose to smoke inside instead, do your best to ventilate the area so the smoke leaves the space where you’re toking. A few tips for doing this includes opening a window, placing a fan outside the window, turning on a ceiling fan, and/or turning on vent fans.

Special/Separate Clothing for Smoking Marijuana

After smoking marijuana, your clothes tend to smell. So if you don’t want to smell like marijuana after lighting up, you can designate a jacket or piece of clothing just for smoking. Therefore, that piece of clothing will smell like smoke, whereas your fresh clothes underneath won’t. Completely changing your clothes after smoking marijuana is ideal, however, that’s not always possible. Instead, try designating one piece of clothing to be your “smoking jacket.”

However, if you don’t have a designated piece of clothing for toke sessions, consider removing any jackets, scarves, or other easily removable clothing item so they don’t absorb the smoke.

Homemade Sploofs

If you’re crafty and interested in making a homemade creation to not smell like marijuana smoke, you can make a “sploof.” A sploof is a container into which you blow smoke to neutralize the marijuana smell. You can make this at home by stuffing dryer sheets into a paper towel/toilet paper roll.

Smell-Proof Bags & Containers

On another note, regarding carrying your marijuana, there are different bags and containers you can utilize to conceal the smell. It’s best to always keep your marijuana in an airtight bag/container if you don’t want your backpack, purse, bag, and/or clothes to smell like bud. If you want to be extra safe, consider purchasing a reusable smell-proof airtight bag, which will last much longer than a standard sandwich bag.

Smell-proof bags are essential when you’re out in public, and especially in areas where there may be law enforcement officers around.

Alternative Delivery Methods

Aside from smoking marijuana, there are other delivery methods like vaping through a vape pen or vaporizer and/or consuming edibles. Both options emit nearly no smell, and people won’t notice you’re high because you won’t smell like marijuana. Overall, vape pens and even one-hitters provide users with not only a puff of smoke to release, but also the control to exhale it out of a window. Generally, one-hitters and vape pens help eliminate the constant marijuana smoke surrounding your location while also helping prevent the smell from attaching to your clothes.

Scented Body Sprays, Perfume, & Cologne

After smoking marijuana, it’s common to spritz a scented body spray, perfume, and/or cologne on your clothing and/or body to mask the marijuana smell. However, it’s important to not over-do it because then it’ll be obvious that you’re trying to cover up the smell of weed. When using a body spray, select one that’s a natural scent as compared to an artificial scent, because the smell of marijuana is already extremely potent.

Preparation, Planning, & Execution

Once you finish smoking marijuana, it’s common to feel as though you smell like it, which can sometimes lead to paranoia. There’s no need to be paranoid though, especially if you put a plan in place before getting high. Then, all you’ll have to do is follow through on a few steps to cover up or eliminate the smell of marijuana.
