Many would-be home growers are deterred by one commonly held misconception: growing your own marijuana is very expensive. When people think of home grows, they often think of an extremely complex hydroponics setup that can cost thousands of dollars. In reality, however, you can grow marijuana for cheap. Here are two ways to grow marijuana at home for less than $150.
This does not have to be the case!
We at Leafbuyer want to make sure you know that growing your own cannabis doesn’t have to be expensive.
In fact, if you take an extremely minimalist approach, you can start your own home grow for as little as $50! Below we’ll outline some of the most cost-effective ways to grow, along with some of the weed-growing expenses to plan for. Here are the most cost-effective ways we’ve found to grow your own marijuana:
1. Minimalist Outdoor (~$50)
This setup is for those who want to start to grow marijuana for cheap. This isn’t fancy, but you can still get great results if you plant in an area with great light.
Keep in mind that outdoor growing isn’t possible unless you have a private (preferably enclosed and locked) space that gets at least 10 hours of direct sunlight every day. If you’ve got the space to grow, you’re already halfway there!
You can expect to spend around $50 to set up a few plants. This money covers a few bags of soil (~$5 each), containers for the plants (~$3 each), and seeds (~$10 each). Since light and many nutrients are provided naturally, that’s about all you need to get growing with a simple setup outdoors! Keep in mind that this is the bare minimum, and there are many additions you can make to improve the quality and life of your outdoor flowers.
2. Minimalist Indoor (~$100-$150)
This setup will allow you to start a successful indoor grow of up to 3 plants, while keeping costs as low as possible. Indoor growers will enjoy more controlled conditions and privacy, but will have to spend a little bit more to get good results.
A basic indoor grow for marijuana for cheap can have a low setup cost of around $100. All you really need are a basic 125watt light (~$30), some 2-gallon containers (~$3 each), soil (~$5/bag), a fan (~$12), and seeds (~$10 each).
This basic setup won’t get you world-class yields or buds testing over 20% THC, but you can still grow some great product and won’t be disappointed if you’re just growing for yourself or a few buddies. Another great feature of this setup is that it only takes about 6 square feet of indoor space so you can set up in a closet!
It should be noted that both of the above setups are not optimized for quality and yield. There are many upgrades you can make to either setup to increase your results, but they do add significantly to the startup costs.
To set up a quality indoor grow with a fixed 600watt light (~$50) with a ballast (~$50), fans, carbon filter (~$60), time switch (~$7) and exhaust (~$135), expect to spend $300-$400. However, remember that you don’t have to have a killer high-tech setup in order to grow some great product!
We recommend trying one of the simpler setups to get your grow going and then experiment with some additional investments in your future harvests. Whatever you choose, we hope that you can use this guide as a reference for setting up your home grow in the least expensive way possible!
