Marijuana Dispensaries in Ironwood, Michigan
Marijuana Dispensaries in Ironwood, MichiganWith a dispensary in Ironwood, Michigan, you don't have to spend a day traveling to Houghton, Hubbell, or Calumet just to pick up some cannabis. But don't forget your medical marijuana card as all dispensaries in the state serve only medical marijuana patients. Because even though recreational weed is legal in Michigan, you can't yet buy it in a store without a state-issued medical marijuana card.
You can either wait until recreational sales start -- the first recreational dispensaries are expected to open in 2020 -- or you can get a card of your own by talking to a 420-friendly doctor you can find right here on Leafbuyer.
Medical Marijuana in MichiganPassing 63 percent to 37 percent, the Michigan Compassionate Care Initiative in 2008 made Michigan the thirteenth state in the U.S. to pass a medical marijuana law. On the ballot as Proposal 1, the new law would allow anyone with a doctor's recommendation to possess two-and-a-half ounces of pot for the use for certain medical conditions.
For patients, however, the tricky part was that no medical dispensaries yet existed in the state -- including Ironwood's own marijuana dispensary -- so although patients could possess and use cannabis, they couldn't buy it legally. Fortunately, patients were allowed to grow their own pot at home -- up to 12 plants -- but putting the burden on patients was criticized by some as a significant technical burden to the success of the new program.
Recreational Marijuana in MichiganTen years later, Michigan voters passed the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act, which would allow the use, possession, and cultivation of marijuana within the state's borders. The 2018 law made Michigan the tenth state in the U.S., and the first state in the Midwest, to legalize cannabis for recreational use.
But like when Michigan's medical marijuana bill was passed in 2008, recreational users today have no way to legally buy cannabis, though the Ironwood dispensary currently serves the medical market. They can, however, legally possess and grow their own pot. And Michigan residents are free to apply to the state's medical marijuana program if there's a pressing medical need.
