Marijuana Dispensaries in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Marijuana Dispensaries in Grand Rapids, MichiganEven though recreational weed is legal in the state, we're still in the early days of Michigan's cannabis industry and recreational dispensaries have yet to open. But since there are plenty of 420-friendly doctors right here in Grand Rapids, dispensaries all over the state are your oyster with a Michigan medical marijuana card in hand -- even in Holland, which is just 40 minutes away.
Recreational dispensaries, however, are the stuff of legend. Everyone talks about them, but no one's actually been in one. That's because although weed has been legal for adults to cultivate, possess and use in the state, recreational dispensaries aren't expected to open until 2020.
Medical Marijuana in MichiganPassed in 2008 by a margin well over a million votes, the Michigan Compassionate Care Initiative made Michigan the thirteenth state in the U.S. to create a medical marijuana program. Permitting patients to possess up to two-and-a-half ounces of cannabis, the law defined 12 qualifying medical diseases that would earn a medical marijuana card. Patients were also allowed to cultivate up to 12 plants at home, or designated caregivers registered with the state could do so on their behalf.
But before anyone could get a state-issued medical marijuana card, they had to be recommended by their doctor for the cannabis program. Good thing there are pot-friendly doctors right here in Grand Rapids. Marijuana dispensaries here we come!
Recreational Marijuana in MichiganTen years after passing medical marijuana, Michigan voters brought recreational marijuana to adults aged 21 and up in the state in 2018. Named the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act but known more commonly as it appeared on the November ballot, Question 1 allows adults to possess up to two-and-a-half ounces of flower marijuana in public, with a limit of an additional 10 ounces at home. The law also allows for the cultivation of up to 12 cannabis plants, though you can't create your own dispensary in Grand Rapids with a few roommates -- the household limit is still 12.
