The Calaveras County Marijuana Ban

Medical marijuana is currently legal in California, and recreational marijuana is becoming legal in 2018, but many residents in Calaveras County are fighting commercial marijuana cultivation with a county-wide ban. Members of the community, including Calaveras County Sheriff Rick DiBasilio, seek to ban commercial marijuana cultivation in Calaveras County. Surrounding areas such as Amador, Tuolumne, and Stanislaus Counties have already banned commercial marijuana cultivation, and Calaveras County residents want to follow in their footsteps.

Most communities in California are embracing recreational pot. More than 80% of Californians voted to legalize recreational cannabis in the last election. But not all cities are jumping on the marijuana bandwagon. Several cities will have restrictions on California recreational cannabis, and some are banning it all together.

In the decades since, the California cannabis industry has grown to include over a million patients, generating billions of dollars in collective sales since the program started. The Bureau of Medical Cannabis Regulation, recently renamed the Bureau of Cannabis Control, is California's cannabis regulatory agency. They oversee the rules and regulations of the cannabis industry, hear from special committees and policy groups, and administer licenses for businesses in the cannabis sector, among other things.
